Launching the site is a handover point. Updates, backups, content and working contact routes still need an owner.
Decide who is responsible
A WordPress website involves software, hosting and content that can change over time. Before launch, agree on who will handle updates, renewals and unexpected issues. That might be the business owner, the developer or a maintenance provider. The important part is that the responsibility is explicit rather than assumed.
Make backups useful
A backup is valuable only if it can be used when needed. Ask what is included, where copies are stored and how a restore would work. The right frequency depends on how often the website changes. A busy store has different needs from a small brochure site. Check that backup access is not dependent on the same failure you are trying to recover from.
Treat updates as a process
Updates can bring fixes and changes, but they can also affect compatibility. Review significant changes and use a staging or testing workflow where practical. After updating, check the forms, navigation and any essential booking or store functions. An update list is not the same as confirmation that the business journey still works.
Maintain the information too
Keep services, contact details, opening hours and staff information current. Remove outdated promotions. Check important links and review the messages generated by forms or booking tools. A technically healthy website can still mislead customers if its information is stale.
Define what maintenance includes
A maintenance agreement should explain the routine tasks, response expectations and limits. New pages, redesigns or complex feature work may be separate projects. Keep domain, hosting and paid license renewals visible so they do not become surprises. The aim is a website that remains useful and recoverable, with a clear route to help. Maintenance is not glamorous, but it is part of making the original investment last.
