WordPress or Wix: Which Fits Your Business Better?

Choose the platform around your workflow, ownership needs and future plans, rather than assuming one builder wins every project.

The useful question is who will run it

Before comparing layouts or features, decide who will maintain the website. Will you handle content yourself? Will a developer manage changes? Do you want one provider to handle the platform and hosting? Your answer changes the kind of setup that will feel comfortable six months after launch. A platform that suits one business can be frustrating for another.

When Wix may be a sensible choice

Wix can suit a business that wants a hosted website builder and a contained management experience. Its platform handles hosting and software updates. The trade-off is that a Wix site runs on Wix infrastructure; moving the same working site to another hosting company is not a normal export process. Check the specific plan and business features you need before committing, because availability and costs can change.

When self-hosted WordPress may fit better

Self-hosted WordPress can make sense when you need control over hosting, a flexible publishing structure or integrations that benefit from its theme and plugin ecosystem. That flexibility creates responsibilities: hosting, backups, updates and compatibility need an owner. WordPress.org software and WordPress.com hosting plans are different offerings, so compare the actual setup being proposed rather than the name alone.

Compare the complete operating cost

Look beyond the first build price. List hosting or platform subscription, paid extensions, maintenance, future edits and any specialist support. Then describe a likely future change, such as adding a booking workflow or moving a store. Ask how each option would handle that change. This gives you a more useful comparison than a simple feature checklist.

A practical decision checklist

Write down your required pages, integrations, editing needs, publishing plans and maintenance capacity. Test the editor if you will be using it regularly. Neither platform automatically brings customers or earns search rankings. The quality of the content, the customer journey and the implementation still matter. Choose the setup that can support the business with the least unnecessary friction.
